Leilehua vs Kahuku – Red Division Finals
From The Honolulu Advertiser:
Hauoli Jamora achieved a lineman’s dream by scoring a touchdown, but he’ll take the five sacks that helped top-ranked Kahuku rally past No. 3 Leilehua 24-20 last night at Aloha Stadium to win its second consecutive and 14th O’ahu Interscholastic Association football title since 1970.
Punga Vea’s 44-yard touchdown run on an end reverse with five minutes, six seconds left in the game was the second of two fourth-quarter TDs to help the Red Raiders come back from a 20-10 deficit after three quarters.
Kahuku (11-0) draws a first-round state Division I tournament bye and plays in one semifinal Nov. 27 at Aloha Stadium.
Leilehua (8-3) will play Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin, at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku. The game will be aired live by OC 16.
Last night’s game was delayed about 15 minutes with 7:35 left in the game when Leilehua’s leading receiver, Kamana Akagi, was taken to the hospital by ambulance after a collision with a Kahuku player on an incomplete pass. Akagi raised his right arm as he was being lifted into the ambulance, apparently trying to show everyone he was OK. Leilehua athletic director Jimmy Toyota said Akagi was unconscious for a while, but was optimistic the injury wasn’t too serious.
“It was hard because Mana’s one of our main receivers and we just love’em as a brother,” Leilehua senior QB Andrew Manley said. “So seeing him leave like that just hurt all of us. We knew we had to pick it up. We wanted to try to play for him, but the ball happened to go their way and they came out with a win. They’re a great team.”
Kahuku’s Jamora, who switches from 52 to jersey No. 97 when he plays offense, landed on the loose ball after Johnny Tupuola blocked Fred Patrones’ punt in the end zone that pulled Kahuku to 20-17 with 8:30 left in the game.
But it was his relentless pass rushing that had Manley under pressure most of the time.
“I think the sacks (were more satisfying) because the touchdown was kind of given,” Jamora said. “The ball was just there.”
The Mules trailed 10-0 after the first quarter before Manley’s two second-quarter TD passes put them ahead, 13-10 at the half.
Kahuku scored on its first series after Leilehua only managed a 16-yard punt to the Mules’ 34. But Leilehua’s defense stiffened enough to allow Kahuku to settle on a 42-yard field goal by Cameron Mercado with 7:05 left in the first quarter.
A sack by Jamora on Manley forced a fumble that Kona Schwenke recovered at the Mules’ 44. Tailback Viliami Pasi scored from 5 yards out with no time left on the clock to end the first quarter. Mercado’s PAT made it 10-0.
The Mules finally got on the board in the second quarter. Manley dropped a rainbow pass to Darrien Shealy for a 31-yard TD, but Timothy Momiyama missed his PAT to keep it 10-6 with 4:58 left in the half.
The Mules later scored on Manley’s 10-yard fade pass to Akagi. Momiyama’s PAT made it 13-10 at the half.
The Mules increased their lead in the third quarter when a low snap from center in punt formation delayed the punter enough to have his punt blocked and downed at the Kahuku 28. Four plays later, Manley hit Shealy on a 17-yard TD pass to make it 20-10.
Kahuku pulled to 20-17 with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter when Tupuola blocked a punt that was recovered by Jamora in the end zone.
Kahuku took the lead after punter Fred Padrones came up two yards shy on a fake punt, giving the Red Raiders the ball at the Mules’ 48. Vea scored on an end reverse on a 44-yard run to give Kahuku a 24-20 lead with 5:06 left.

Leilehua vs Farrington – OIA Semi Finals
From: The Honolulu Advertiser
No. 4 Leilehua beat No. 3 Farrington at its own game, with a tenacious defense, in a 9-7 win in the O’ahu Interscholastic Association Red semifinals last night at Aloha Stadium.
The Mules will play Kahuku for the Red championship Friday at Aloha Stadium. The two teams have secured Division I state tournament berths.
“We always hang our hat on our defense and we’re going to have to continue to do that,” Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said. “If we’ve got down to a field goal, win by one point, we’ll do that and leave our defense on the field.”
Cornerback Sly Izumigawa’s third-quarter interception paved the way for Leilehua’s only TD, a 19-yard pass from Andrew Manley to Kamana Akagi. On third-and-4 from the Farrington 25, Izumigawa intercepted Jared Hakuole’s pass at the Farrington 37 and returned it to the 19.
“The two receivers did a switch and I just played right between, came up and made the play,” Izumigawa said of the pick. The Mules’ defense constantly bent, but didn’t break, except when it allowed a 54-yard run by Siaosi Feleunga late in the game that set up the Govs’ only score. Feleunga’s run took the ball to the Leilehua 13 and set up Hakuole’s 14-yard TD fade pass to Ranold Williams in the left corner of the end zone to pull the Govs to 9-6. Moses Kaina’s PAT made it 9-7 with 3:52 to play.
Leilehua milked 1:43 off the clock on its ensuing series before eventually punting. The Govs took over from its 44, but reached only their 49 before losing the ball on downs with 16 seconds left. The Mules ran out the clock by downing the ball the next two plays.
The Mules took a 3-0 lead into the half on a 36-yard field goal by sophomore Timothy Momiyama with 3:05 left in the second quarter.
The Mules (8-2) return to the title game for the first time since 2007, when they beat Wai’anae, 12-3. This will be the Mules’ fifth title game appearance and third time against top-ranked Kahuku. Leilehua won in 1974 and lost in 1972.
Kahuku (10-0) will be playing in its 19th title game since postseason play started in 1970. The Red Raiders are 13-5 in championship games.
No. 3 Farrington (8-2) will play No. 8 Castle (6-4) for third place Nov. 7 for the league’s final state tournament berth.

Leilehua vs Kailua – OIA Quarter Finals
Taken from the Honolulu Advertiser:
WAHIAWA — No. 4 Leilehua rallied with 19 second-half points to hold off Kailua, 29-13, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Tournament quarterfinal last night.
A crowd of about 2,000 at Hugh Yoshida Stadium saw the Mules improve to 7-2.
Leilehua will play the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal between Kapolei and Farrington next Friday at Aloha Stadium. The Surfriders ended their season at 4-6.
Kailua led 13-10 at the half before Leilehua went ahead on a 1-yard Austin Schmidt touchdown run in the third quarter. The Mules padded their lead on a 10-yard TD pass from Andrew Manley to CJ Bailey in the fourth and sealed it with a 7-yard Manley run in the final minutes. A booming 61-yard punt by Kailua’s Eric Lum pinned the Mules inside their 10-yard line on their first drive of the game. After a 3-yard loss on first down, Carlos Marshall picked up 9 yards on second down before Manley’s first interception of the night was returned by Kailua’s Corey Lau 43 yards to the Mules’ 1. Chevrolet Mikaele scored on the next play on a quarterback sneak to open the scoring with 8:38 left in the first quarter. Lum kicked the PAT to make it 7-0. The Mules regrouped on their ensuing drive. Marshall carried five times, including his 17-yard touchdown run with 7:10 left in the first. Timothy Momiyama’s extra point tied it at 7. Early in the second quarter, Leilehua’s Ryan Pasoquen picked off Mikaele to give his team possession at midfield. The Mules were able to move the ball down to the Kailua 4-yard line, but a delay of game on third-and-goal pushed them back to the Surfriders’ 9. Manley’s third-down pass fell incomplete and Leilehua settled for a 26-yard field goal by Momiyama to pull ahead 10-7 with 5:41 until halftime. Lau converted on a pivotal third-and-10 for the Kailua offense with a 33-yard throw-short, run-long screen pass from Mikaele to set-up a 21-yard TD pass from Mikaele to Dustin Kalai two plays later. Kalai, a junior receiver, got behind a pair of Mules’ defenders and Mikaele found him in the back of the end zone to give the Surfriders a 13-10 halftime lead. The extra point was missed. In the third quarter, Leilehua’s DaQuan Wyatt recovered a muffed punt by the Surfriders at the Kailua 40. Manley converted on two four-down passes to keep the drive alive, resulting in Schmidt’s 1-yard TD run. The PAT was no good but Leilehua led, 16-13, with 2:40 left in the third.
